Maria Luisa Ortiz Women’s Cooperative/Nicaragua

Disarm is providing medical training and material aid to the Maria Luisa Ortiz Women’s Cooperative, which offers free community based family health care to remote communities in rural Nicaragua.

Founded by internationally acclaimed health promoter and human rights activist Dorothy Granada, the Women’s Cooperative provides primary care, immunization services, reproductive health care, safe birthing and cancer prevention to the community of Mulukuku. In addition, the Cooperative has developed a “Clinics in the Mountains” program to provide basic health care to rural communities surrounding Mulukuku, many of which have no access to any health services. Some of these outlying communities, which range in size from 300 to 2,000 people, are not reachable by road, only on horseback or on foot.
