Saving Women’s Lives — Ministry of Health.
Disarm is currently working in partnership with the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health and the University of California-Irvine to launch a comprehensive program for the prevention, screening and treatment of cervical cancer. As the leading cause of death among women in Latin America 30-60 years of age, cervical cancer has a devastating impact on families and communities. In Nicaragua, only 8% of the at-risk population is currently tested, and one-third of deaths of women over 35 years of age are due to cervical cancer. We believe that when this program is implemented nationally, mortality from cervical cancer can be reduced by as much as 50 percent.
