Organize a Teach-In

There's nothing more powerful than combining education with action. A teach-in gives you the chance to present information yourself or bring in others to present; to allow time for a discussion of the issues with the audience; and to give participants a clear action to take at the end.

Here are some tips for holding a teach-in:

  • Decide what kind of event you want to organize. You can discuss the topics yourself, invite a speaker, show a movie about the subject, or invite local educators to hold a forum. Consider getting in touch with a professor or someone who has experience in some of the Latin American issues Disarm is working on.
  • Pick a location that is accessible to the community and large enough to host any activities you'd like to do. Organize any visual aids and get brochures from Disarm. See if a local café or restaurant will donate food and drinks for your event. Finally, get the word out about your teach-in. Put up posters and contact other organizations that might be interested in attending.
  • Begin your teach-in with an introduction that gives information about Disarm, the type of activities that you have been working on, and background information on the issues. If you're hosting a speaker, you can keep your intro short and get the speaker started.
  • Be sure to allow time for questions once you've finished and then try to suggest specific ways the audience can take action. Have a sign-up sheet available for those interested in learning more and getting involved.
